Masks are one of the hardest and most important pieces of gear to get right. Everyone has a different face and a bad mask will ruin your dive. Most people recommend trying on masks at a local dive shop. We have some tips to make sure you buy what is best for you.
Simple is better. Most experienced divers end up using a mask made of a single piece of high quality glass and a silicone skirt.
Straps

Virtually all masks come with a rubber strap but most divers end up switching to a neoprene strap because it’s easier to take on and off. My favorite strap is made by Hollis. It’s quite affordable and well worth the $15. I’ve tried cheap neoprene straps that attach with Velcro and they do not last long.
Prescriptions
Some dive shops stock lenses that they can change out of specific masks. Just don’t count on them having your prescription. If you want your prescription you will most likely have to order it.
Another thing to keep in mind is that the interface between your mask and the water acts like a magnifying lens. If you are nearsighted, this makes a stronger prescription less necessary.
Contact lenses are another option. It is highly recommended to use disposable contacts due to the risk of sea creatures attaching to the lenses and infecting your eye.
Tinted Lenses
The water blocks a lot of light. Tinting is rarely desired.
